Dublin Port and Docks Board Accounts Collection

Financial records are among the richest sources for understanding how an organisation functioned. While they record annual income and expenditure, they also document the decisions, priorities and investments that shaped an institution over time. The Dublin Port and Docks Board accounts are no exception.

The digitised account books available through the Dublin Port Archive website cover much of the period between 1866 and 1921, spanning the establishment of the Dublin Port and Docks Board, the expansion of the Victorian port, the transition from sail to steam, and the challenges of the First World War and the Irish revolutionary period.

Viewed together, these volumes provide far more than annual balance sheets. They record investment in engineering projects, harbour improvements, dredging works and new technology, while also documenting the everyday costs of operating the port, from wages and pensions to pilotage, maintenance and administration. Read alongside the Board’s minute books, engineering drawings and other archival records, they help explain not only what was built, but how those developments were financed and managed.
